The rooftop bar
The rooftop bar offers lovely views over the Tower of London, Tower Bridge and the Shard – especially at night, and most particularly from the rooftop terrace.
There’s the full range of beers, wines and spirits that you’d expect from a hotel bar. Cocktails include the Millionaire Mojito (muddled mint and fresh lime, Plantation 5 year gold rum, bitters and gomme syrup, served in a chilled martini glass with a champagne float) and London Calling (vanilla–infused Tanqueray gin, shaken with Cointreau, lemon bitters, vanilla sugar and lemon juice in a chilled martini glass).
When the weather’s amenable, the terrace barbecue menu includes the likes of grilled tuna steak, marinated Poussin, sticky ribs and a Moroccan lamb burger.
Outdoor tables are available on a first-come, first-served basis, but it’s possible to reserve spots at the indoor bar.
Skylounge is currently (July 2013) playing host to the Rum Shack, a Caribbean-inspired pop-up lounge. Now you can enjoy a bottle of Red Stripe (Jamaican beer) or share a party-sized jug of mojito, daiquiri or sangria with your friends, before enjoying Jamaican snacks like patties, all-spice monk fish and prawn skewers, or fish fritters with hot sauce. There’s even a DIY guacamole option, where you can choose the spice level and crush the ingredients together yourself . All to a backdrop of reggae beats and funny signs forbidding naked sunbathing and telling visitors that ‘sharing tables with strangers is a must’.
This Hilton Doubletree is excellent value for money – of course depending on the rate, you end up with.
Location is good, close to London Bridge, an underground station and the terminus of the DLR. The hotel still feels quite new/newly renovated with nice appeal.
Our room was somewhat small, it is central London after all, but with space enough, an ok working space, a queen-size bed and fairly large bathroom. Important: the bed was really good and with real duvet. The a/c was ok.
Wifi throughout the hotel worked well and fast, didn’t require password and was free. An iMac in the rooms serves as computer and tv. Elevator capacity was ok.
The service at the front desk was excellent. It was heavy staffed and no waiting time whatsoever. I had lost my iphone during a tour of the hotel and staff did everything they could to find it, and indeed after we got back to the hotel around midnight, my phone was on my bed with a nice note. Talk about service huh!
The big rooftop bar (with amber outside seating) is a very nice feature. Bar staff could have been a bit faster when we visited with light-medium load.
The breakfast is high quality with a good selection of bread, cheese, fruit and veggies.
We loved our stay here, highly recommended!
